| Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention please? Because every now and then in life, there?s opportunity you should seize. And that moment is upon us, after all, 50 years ago, Ron and Mary were wed, and I?ve got some thoughts on my mind, yes, there?s a few heartfelt words that need to be said. Now our parents are such an affectionate, loving couple, and to us, they?ve been the finest parents on planet Earth, and Mom, Dad, we just wanted to say ?thank you?, yes, we do appreciate your true and honest worth. And I know you?ve renewed your vows today, such devotion, most of us have never witnessed or heard, but to be honest, there was no need to renew them at all, because for 50 years, you?ve kept your promise, every word. Now you met in ?54 in the back seat of a Chevy, look what happens when you answer an ad for a shared ride, by the time you got to Alburquerque you were kissing, ?Ron was interesting and different? Mom would later confide. Your first official date was to see ?The Drunkard?, a live melodrama, Ron never took a girl to the movies on a first date, and that was really where your story started, how you two found one another?s soul-mate. The following year, 1955, was a big one indeed, Mary was pinned, engaged and went to Miss CU?s court, and Ron was asked to walk someone down the aisle, so he told Mary, without a second thought. Traditionally, who goes to the CU crowning was kept a secret, so unbeknowingly, Ron had truly let the cat out, but the wheels of destiny were already turning, and they were both finding what true love was all about. Mary still has the first valentine Ron ever gave her, it says ?Can?t think! Can't think! I?m in a stew?, now, how does the last line go? That?s right, ?I?m head over heels over you?. You both graduated and were married at the Blessed Sacrament, mostly family, but the rest of the gang were there, and they you moved to Sacramento, for the Aerojet job, and for 40 years, you?ve survived all the firings, every scare. The phone still rings off the hook for consulting projects, and to so very many, you?ve remained lifelong friends, but you?ve also been devoted to family, church and work, and you?re devotion to us all simply knows no ends. And, along the way your branches have spread, my! Look at how your mighty oak has grown, Tom, Anne, Jim, Kelly, Steven, Christina, Kyle and Caitlyn, well, we?re all very grateful for the love that you?ve shown. We?ll never forget our trips to Southfork and Mt. Lassen, a guitar, marshmallows and songs by the fire, ?Hey Lilee, Lilee, Lile? we?d all sing, the boys sang low, the girls a little higher. Mary somehow always managed to find the church on Sunday, and afterwards, Ron would find time to fish the streams, but these are just some of our memories, truly, we had the childhood of many dreams. You used to bring out the masking tape for our road trips, Colorado, The Goodmans, 4 adults, 4 kids, we all got on so well, then there was John Gibb?s and Steve Morgan?s cabins, so many memories, so many tales to tell. And we?ve shared so many wonderful moments, in truth, there?s just too many to individually list, just know that each and every one is simply precious, there?s not one that we would?ve missed. There was always an answer to ?what?s for dinner?? Sometimes, there was the famous Mexican, prepared by Dad, but it was always dinner at six, a balanced meal, in truth, some of the nicest meals we?ve ever had. Jim got to hear his first R rated word, Dad used to fix everything, this time it was the brakes, and then there was the full shaped Christmas tree, and you should see the lemon meringue pie mother bakes. I could go on about Thanksgivings and Christmas's, evening trips to Thrifty and the best ice cream cones, but I really want to talk about my parents, even though Dad doesn?t say much, when anybody phones. Because they both instilled a great set of values, honesty, truthfulness, ethics, things upon which we can build, but they?ve also taught us to be independent, so we?d like to thank them for every lesson they?ve instilled. Because we are who we are because of them, and we?ve never really said just how wonderful you are, but if our love for you were a distance, then it would be further than the furthest star. We also wanted to say Happy 50th Anniversary, I guess that?s really what these words are for, here?s to you, Mom and Dad, you?re truly wonderful, and here?s to you meaning every word, for evermore. |
