40th Wedding Anniversary gift to parents who found the once in a lifetime love and eloped

What is your name : Jennifer E. Napier

Who do you want the poem written for: My Parents - Mom and Dad - Stuart and Jeanne
Napier

Why do you want the poem written: IT's their 40th Anniversary

What are the key messages you would like to send: I love them and am so proud of their relationship. I would rather be single for the rest of my life than not to have a marriage like theirs - the once in a lifetime love. They've worked hard to maintain their love and yet make it look simplistic and easy.

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: Their song is 'You're the reason I'm living' by Bobby Darrin
They were high school sweethearts. Met in yearbook study hall. Stuart called Jeanne for their first date and she had to call her best friend Kathy later that night to ask who was this guy she just accepted a date with? Their first date - one of Jeanne's former beaus followed them and let the air out of Stuart's tires. Jeanne's parents were not impressed with that story on their first date. They eloped. Jeanne's brother Duane took one of Stuart's pictures and drew on it a 'beatle-like' wig - made Jeanne cry. Three children, Stuart, Jennifer, and Melissa - in that order. Stuart named for Dad and grandfather, Jennifer for 'Jennifer Juniper' by Donovan, and Melissa for 'Sweet Melissa' by the Allman Brothers. Dad actually 'approved' the girls names suggested by Mom b/c of those popular songs at the time. Stu died a few years ago from complications with a brain tumor. Mom and Dad sacrificed a lot more than many parents would have to keep his life as 'normal' as possible after that. They would do it again in a heartbeat. His death was 'softened' by remembering other relatives in heaven who were making a place for him. Not sure how I want all of that mentioned - nothing too sappy so that when I'm reading it I'll cry! Melissa got married a few years ago to Steve. Pretty wedding. Jennifer ? single

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): Happy, loving,

Heart to Heart

You first met in yearbook study hall,
high-school sweethearts from the very start,
and you started out on your journey of a lifetime ,
and so far, it's been 40 years, heart to heart.

Actually, Stuart called Jeanne for their first date,
and out of politeness, Jeanne happily said "yes",
but she had to phone Kathy to find out who he was,
the stranger (who's given her a lifetime of happiness).

Their first date was quite a deflating affair,
because a former beau decided to let off air,
Jeanne's parents were not impressed with that story,
but thankfully, there's many more that we can share.

Because some times parents know what's best for you,
but then at other times, they extinguish all hope,
so what's a young couple in love supposed to do?
Well, the only and obvious answer is "Let's Elope".

So, off you went and got married,
not exactly the wedding of your dream,
but through it all, you've stuck together,
you've proved to the world, you truly are a team.

You make it look simplistic and oh so easy,
but you work hard to maintain your lifetime love,
and we know we've been blessed to have shared you,
we know that we've been blessed with your love.

Your song is "You're the reason I'm living",
yet a 'Beatle-like' wig can make you cry,
but you've put the music in our lives,
I'd better explain that (or at least I'll try).

You see, us girls were named after songs,
and Juniper has never, ever tasted so Sweet,
and throughout our lives, you've kept the rhythm,
Mom, Dad, thanks for keeping the beat.

Now, I know that Stu would also like to say "thanks",
because his spirit is alive and well, inside of us all,
and because of you, we've all walked taller,
in fact, we both feel about ten feet tall.

You've done so very much for all of us,
and along the way, there's been many a sacrifice,
and of all the parents in this world,
I don't know of two even half as nice.

A few years ago, Melissa married Steve,
and it was such a pretty wedding, a perfect day,
and because you eloped, it was possible,
and that one line leaves so very much to say:

Because we are who we are because of you,
we've never really said just how wonderful you are,
but if our love for you were a distance,
then it would be further than the furthest star.

We're so proud of your relationship,
the perfect epitome of a husband and wife,
and if I could not have a marriage like yours,
well, then I'd rather be single for the rest of my life!

So we'd better finish by wishing you Happy 40th Anniversary,
we guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, Mom and Dad, you're truly wonderful,
and here's to our everlasting love, for evermore.
