| There was a teenage digger, On some distant foreign shore, Muddy, bloodstained and fighting, Someone else's bloody war. There was that rising baker, Far too early out of bed, And struggling to make a quid, Making other people's bread. And there are all the people, In this great and promised land, And let us all go forward, Side by side and hand in hand. There was the overweight pollie, Plying for the voters' tick, Making all the promises, Knowing most could never stick. There was another tourist, Who wanted the crocodile, "Dundee, go and catch me one", The waiter said with a smile. And there are all the people, In this great and promised land, And let us all go forward, Side by side and hand in hand. There was a sun bleached surfer, Who cherished his Malibu, And looked for nothing finer, Than a tube to glide straight through. There was a dashing batsman, Splendid in his gold & green, It's the finest century, The WACA had ever seen. And we are all the people, In this great and promised land, And let us all go forward, Side by side and hand in hand. Now, I ask all the people, Who are in this melting pot, To take this slice of heaven, And be grateful for their lot. And when I leave this planet, And I get to paradise, I hope it's Australia, Even maybe half as nice.
