A Gift to Parents on their 50th Wedding Anniversary from their five children, their home is a gathering place frequently visited by all

What is your name : Catherine Dennis Clarke

Who do you want the poem written for: Our parents- Maude and Norwood Dennis Jr.

Why do you want the poem written: 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration on October 16, 2004

What are the key messages you would like to send: Maude and Norwood are immigrants from Liberia, West Africa since 1985. They have 5 children- Cathy, Teddy, Maude, Barbara, and Ida; 9 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. They left their beloved homeland, Liberia, due to civil unrest in the country. They both previously studied in the U.S. and obtained their college degrees here. They are opposites in many respects and they prove that opposites do attract. Norwood is an accountant and is reserved, and Maude is an educator, specializing in music, and is very outgoing. She still teaches piano lessons, and he continues to support her in her love for music. Norwood worked for the United Nations and the Liberian government We, the kids, grew up in New York City.
They love their family. We want to thank them for their unconditional love, support and encouragement. We are grateful that they are our parents, and appreciate the fine example they have set for us. They love their grandchildren -they put family first and are always willing to lend a helping hand.

Do you have any funny, sad, happy, embarrassing or otherwise memorable moments that you would like to share: Their home is a gathering place for everyone. You get to see everyone when you stop by for a while. So, it's best to do all your errands before you end up their because you'll be staying for a while enjoying the fellowship and conversation of all who stop by to visit. Maude spoils Norwood and he loves it. He's a couch potato and she loves to go out and socialize. They are both funny. We cherish the unforgettable memories.

What style of poem would you prefer (happy, sad, romantic etc.): happy, romantic, uplifting, overcoming challenges

Please choose which package you would prefer: Unique

World Teachers

You left your beloved homeland,
no choice, you had to leave Liberia behind,
so you traveled back to the United States,
there was a new destiny for you to find.

You'd previously studied in the U.S.
so you were no stranger to these fruitful shores,
and then you set about building your family,
and you've simply made this your lifelong cause.

Since then, the branches of your tree have spread,
it's quite amazing how quickly they've grown,
5 children, 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild,
we're all very grateful for the love that you've shown.

You are living proof that opposites can attract,
but more importantly, you're proved that they can stay together,
and although in many ways, you're opposite poles,
you have this magnetism, destined to last forever.

Norwood is the accountant and so very reserved,
Maude is the educator, outgoing and full of song,
and together, you've made a great team,
and as parents, you've never put one foot wrong.

Norwood worked for the UN and the Liberian government,
so there's a lot that you could both teach this planet Earth,
because you've proved what commitment is all about,
and we know exactly what your love is really worth.

We, the kids, grew up in New York City,
and we'd like to thank you for everything you've ever done,
yours is a special kind of love, it's one that inspires us,
in every way, you've been like our morning sun.

We are who we are because of you,
and we'd like to thank you for your magnificent support,
truly, you've set a very fine example,
and just for one second, please hold that thought.

Because you've always put the family first,
but you two have never been that far behind,
because you've always been there for us,
never have children known two parents even half as kind.

You're always offering and helping out,
and of course, you give an ear that'll always understand,
and we know that we're indeed very lucky people,
we know the finest parents who's ever walked this land.

Your home is a gathering place for so many,
you get to see everyone when you stop by for a while,
there's always a big welcome on the door mat,
with of course, a warm hug and a welcoming smile.

Actually, it's best to do your errands before you get there,
because the fellowship and conversation always sucks you in,
and we just wanted to say to you both "you're special",
but in truth, we just didn't know where to begin.

We know Maude spoils Norwood (and he loves it),
he's the couch potato and she loves to go out,
but together, we've created so many cherished memories,
and you've certainly taught us what love is all about.

And you've overcome so many challenges,
we've never really said just how wonderful you are,
but if our love for were a distance,
then it would be further than the furthest star.

We just wanted to say Happy 50th Anniversary,
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you Mom and Dad, you're truly wonderful,
and here's to at least another fifty more.
