A 'first love' poem that ended in a special relationship.

Cory was my first boy-as-friend when we were 5-7 years old. We didn't realize this until we were 29, after we had been dating for a couple months, even though we went to high school together and even spent the summer after high school at Glacier National Park. Cory and I never dated before we were 29, but remained friends and kept in touch because he is friends with my mom and aunt. Cory drove 8 hours to Boise when he heard from my aunt that I was having some serious health problems. He drove over to see if he could help me in any way, and because he had just lost a family member and realized that you need to make the effort, or it may be too late. We fell in love and soon he moved to Boise. One night a couple months later we realized that we had lived in Missoula, MT during the same years in '74-'77. Could this be the little Cory that I have thought of so many times over the years, even a couple years ago when I visited Missoula and wondered how I could get a hold of him? We sat there that night and pulled up memories of playing at recess, playing "popcorn" with our shoes and sitting on his lap under the 'fort' where it was really dark and cool even though it was sunny outside. We were both in shock with this realization. Two years earlier, after a few failed relationships and the concern that he would never find 'the one', Cory had felt drawn to find this first girlfriend, even though he couldn't remember her name. When he met and fell in love with me, he had to make the decision to give up on his search for her. The shock on his face when he realized we were the same person!
I have been a single mom for the last 8 years, and I am so thankful that Cory loves my girls and they love him so much. We may never have more children together, and Cory has taken my girls in and loved them as if they were his own. We love our new family together, and all feel more secure and complete.
The man I never knew I always wanted...
| How do you explain the mystery of life? And all the special things planned from above? How God only knows how I needed a tall dark and handsome.. And you needed someone you could truly love? We thought we were just playing, our story started at such an innocent age, but little did we know, way back then, that some day we'd be engaged. We laughed at recess playing popcorn... our shoes flying up into the trees, who knew we were preparing for our tomorrows, who knew we were planning all our "to be's". Who would've thought that sitting together in a "fort", would, much later bring us closer together? And happily bring us to that place, where we are willing to pledge "forever". But one thing in life is certain, time never does stand still and clocks continue to click forward and it seems they always will. As life would have it, we went our separate ways and from time to time we'd wonder, we'd wonder whatever happened to those days. Does he wonder what I look like now? Does she ever think of me? Where's that dark haired little boyfriend, who I played with by the tree? It took an illness and an eight hour drive, for the magic in this story. Could this be the little girl who sat on my lap? Could this be my "popcorn" Cory? And the years had passed so swiftly, we both had changed (which I guess was no surprise), yet there was something so very familiar, every time I looked there into your eyes. Over the years, we'd been drawn to each other, as serendipity played out quite mysteriously at times and the feeling of deja vu is a strong one, like the sound of a silent bell that chimes. I had been a single Mom for eight years and had accepted that as my fate, now I'm so thankful that you're in my life, that you'll forever be my soul-mate. You've taken my girls to your heart, you love them as your own, we're all very grateful for the wisdom, kindness and for the love that you've shown. I treasure the years of planning, that went into this magnificent design, how two hearts once so far apart, are now majestically intertwined. And now we stand here face to face, before all of our friends, and it's now I say "I love you", I'll love you until our journey ends". You were meant for me and I was meant to say "I do", I'm so happy now to realize, I've always been looking for you. |
