Because I could always talk to my Gran, open and honestly,
she is a true South African and the best cook I have ever known,
any hour of the day, she always made my favourite of everything,
I'm very grateful for all the love that she's shown.
You own a spa, massages, facials, make up,
personal training, you know, that sort of thing,
but there's something missing in your life,
even though you're wearing that wedding ring.
Just like the sun that streamed through the stained glass windows,
a simple family wedding, marrying the man of my dreams,
I'll never forget the harpist, the beautiful small chapel,
that's where we became one of the world's finest teams.
I know our wedding was very small,
but there was a big feeling, here in my chest,
because I knew I was marrying the man of my dreams,
and now I know I've married the very best.
You love those old black and white movies,
and from Cleveland, you've travelled afar,
and I think our wedding song was simply perfect,
because you are loved: "Just the way you are"
Because in no time at all we were off to Vegas,
thanks to the enormous generosity of our friends,
$36.00 worth of pennies and a double wedding later,
but that's not quite where this story ends.
Because over that year our love has evolved,
and it's grown to become this beautiful, living thing
and I just wanted to say that I'm proud of you,
I'm very proud that you're wearing my wedding ring.
Mom likes that you can sit and talk about anything,
but you're also happy just sitting with nothing to say,
either way, Mom feels most comfortable when you're near her,
Mom says her finest 24 hours were all on her wedding day.
(NAME) left for Atlanta in a snow storm,
she had to be there, it was a wedding day,
we did not talk because I was still upset,
I didn?t even call her to ask if she was okay.
I remember Ma insisting, against my mother's wishes,
at my wedding, I should have salami on the meat trays,
she certainly taught me to stand up for myself,
but I'm grateful to her in so many other ways.
And thankfully, it wasn?t a shotgun wedding,
but I do want to thank you for the most special day of my life,
just know that you?re still my anchor, my King of Hearts,
even though, after being shot at, (NAME) made me his wife.
Of course, you made sure that (NAME) had a "happy birthday",
but then my whole future shone up in those romantic lights,
and after that, we, I mean you, began the wedding planning,
and that eventuated in one of the world's greatest nights.
Even though I had to drive you home in my poofy wedding dress,
(that was my thanks for the sweet little dot of icing on my nose),
but after cruising so happily through our first year together,
well, I'm just so glad that it was me that you chose.
We've been apart since our wedding,
a cold wintry morning on (DATE)
but it's only our jobs and circumstance that could separate us,
because only with you, my world's a better place to be.
And that moment is upon us,
after all, it's (NAME) and (NAME) wedding day,
and I've got some thoughts on my mind,
yes, I do have some heartfelt words to say.
I give you my love forever true,
my truest ever words, spoken on our wedding day,
and "Idioma" or "Pansy", I love you,
but I do have a couple of other things to say:
We started with a small affair at (WEDDING VENUE),
but a few months later we entertained around 1000 guests,
we sought the blessings of the Gods, our family and friends,
well, I reckon that, with honours, we've passed many of the tests
And I'll never forget our beautiful, so perfect wedding,
I don't remember ever feeling as happy as I did on that day,
I will never forget the way you looked at me as you spoke,
your eyes said everything that you needed to say.
Because do you remember how happy we were?
Do you remember how we felt on our wedding day?
Do you remember the promises we made to each other?
(And that one line leaves so much left to say).
You're great with the kids and you care for us all,
and I know as children go, I am like the third,
but when you said "I do" on our wedding day,
well, they were the sweetest words I've ever heard.
And I think I could say a lot more right now,
but I think I'll save that for our wedding speech,
because I know what we share is truly precious,
it can't be learned and it's something you just can't teach.
You wrote and read a poem at your father?s service,
and you spoke about him missing your wedding day,
and although that one line expresses so much,
it still means there's so much left to say:
Actually, we?re very proud of all your achievements,
you were, and still are, an All American girl,
you?ve carried The Olympic Torch, you?ve shone at sports,
and more than once, you?ve given that baton quite a twirl.
I'll never forget our beautiful wedding ceremony,
exactly three years later, in the garden where we met,
and I know our story is only just starting,
as the saying goes: "You ain't see nothing yet!"
Because it wasn't long before you could hear wedding bells,
Dad was nervous and the grapefruit juice said "hi!"
There you knelt at the alter, Dad white as a ghost,
and in his hands, he kept the juice (or gave it his very best try).
Your Grandparents are proud too,
and you were born on their wedding day,
you now have a lot to live up to,
but we'll be with you every step of the way.
I also wanted to say: "Happy Wedding Day",
I guess that's really what these words are for,
here's to you, (NAME) and (NAME), you're truly wonderful,
and here's to your everlasting love, for evermore.
